Sonja and Gert Jan travel the world in their Milady Landy, a Land Rover camper from 1998. They do it full-time and overland as much as they can, which is why they call themselves overlanders. Since October 2019 the Land Rover Defender has been their home on the road.
Built by the people who live in it
They converted the vehicle into a camper themselves, with some help from professionals. A pop-up roof and a camper interior let them stay inside. On the engine they are clear: the 300 TDI is, in their words, one of the most reliable Land Rover engines.
Where it started
The story of Milady Landy begins in July 2016, when they shipped their old Land Rover to Namibia. The trip took 6 months through southern Africa, crossing 12 countries and covering 26,000 km. They were sure that journey would change their lives. It did. Afterwards they sold their house, bought a new Milady Landy and set off again.
A plan that moves with the road
There is a big plan in their heads, but the route itself is decided day by day. A tip from a fellow traveller, a recommendation in a guidebook, or a change in the health, political or safety situation can send them in a completely different direction.
Overlanding does not cut them off from home. They fly back at least once a year to see their children and grandchildren, and then return to the road.
