Description
A wonderful backdrop for a motorcycle tour - coastal roads with little traffic and varied routes through barren mountain landscapes! The rugged landscape, repeatedly interrupted by small and large lochs, the rocky outcrops covered in moss and heather, the play of colors in nature and, last but not least, the rugged coastline make for a special kind of landscape impression in the Highlands. Defiant castles, ruins, prehistoric sites, and quaint villages complete the picture. A day trip to the Orkney archipelago and a visit to the Isle of Arran will introduce you to two very special Scottish islands.
-
Tour character:
On this motorcycle tour to the far north of Scotland, you will cover a total of around 1,900 km - always accompanied by a fantastic panorama and in large parts on the "North Coast 500". The tour is ridden on your own motorcycle. Two daily stages are slightly longer at around 300 km, but riding in Scotland is pleasant thanks to the low traffic density.
-
Highlights::
- Scotland intensively with your own motorcycle
- incl. ferry journey from/to Amsterdam
- Great routes and coastal roads
- magnificent "North Coast 500
- Impressive landscapes: Isle of Arran and the Orkney Islands

Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival
Individual arrival at the ferry port of Amsterdam (Ijmuiden), embarkation, and departure (approx. 17.30 hrs) towards Great Britain. Overnight stay on board.
-
Day 2: Newcastle - Peebles (approx. 160 km)
Arrival in Newcastle (approx. 9.15 am). If you like, you can take a detour through the city. Then your round trip through Scotland begins. You continue through the vast landscape of Northumberland to the Peebles region. On the way are Melrose Abbey, an impressive monastery ruin, and Traquair House. Overnight stay in the Peebles area.
-
Day 3: Peebles - Ayrshire (approx. 180 km)
You travel to the Dumfries & Galloway region in the southwest of Scotland. You initially follow the course of the River Tweed for long stretches and pass through beautiful countryside. Overnight stay in the Ayrshire area.
-
Day 4: Ayrshire - Isle of Arran (approx. 40 km + ferry)
Take the ferry to the Isle of Arran. In addition to its impressive nature, Brodick Castle is also worth seeing. The castle is surrounded by extensive parkland. The megalithic monuments of Machrie Moor can be found on the west coast. If you like, you can visit the local distillery. Overnight stay on the Isle of Arran.
-
Day 5: Isle of Arran - Fort William (ferry + approx. 170 km)
Back on the mainland, continue along the coast, and head for Dunadd. The historic area was of great importance as a coronation site between the 5th and 9th centuries. Via Kilmartin, where there are numerous megalithic sites, stone circles, rock carvings, and other prehistoric monuments, you ride to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis. It is the highest mountain in Great Britain. Overnight stay in the Fort William area.
-
Day 6: Fort William - Eilean Donan Castle - Gairloch/Ullapool (approx. 210 - 300 km)
Head north to Eilean Donan Castle on Loch Duich. The castle, which is built on a small headland, is both picturesque and defiant. Not without reason has it served as the backdrop for many films - not least Braveheart, Rob Roy, and Highlander. From now on, you will ride along large sections of the North Coast 500 - a fantastic coastal road! Overnight stay in the Gairloch or Ullapool area.
-
Day 7: Gairloch/Ullapool - Durness - Thurso (approx. 230 - 330 km)
Ride past the striking Stac Pollaidh mountain through the lonely regions of northwest Scotland. You can make a stopover in the small village of Durness, where you will also find the remarkable limestone cave Smoo Cave. Durness is one of the most northerly points on the British Isles and you can gaze out over the Atlantic. Overnight stay in the Thurso area.
-
Day 8: Orkney
Day trip to the Orkney archipelago, which consists of around 70 islands. Worth seeing are the Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae and the Bay of Skaill as well as the megalithic site of Maes Howe. On the uninhabited island of Lamb Holm is the Italian Chapel, which was built by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War. You can either go on the excursion on your own motorcycle and experience the islands on your own or, if you would like to have a day "ride-free", you can join an English-speaking coach excursion (only 01.05.-30.09., more details under "Tips"). Overnight stay in the Thurso area.
-
Day 9: Thurso - Inverness (approx. 180 km)
If you wish, you can visit the Caithness Horizons Museum before continuing along the west coast to Inverness. On the way, you can stop at the beautiful Dunrobin Castle. You will catch one or two beautiful views of the coast before you reach Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Overnight stay in the Inverness area.
-
Day 10: Inverness - Edinburgh (approx. 280 - 310 km)
Today you travel to the Scottish capital. If you wish, you can take a detour to Loch Ness on the way and enjoy the view from Urquhart Castle. Or you can take in the intense impressions of the Cairngorms National Park and the Speyside region. The mountain landscape of the route with its lochs, moorland, and heathland will give you another impression of the solitude of the Scottish Highlands. Overnight stay in Edinburgh.
-
Day 11: Edinburgh
Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century and is a lively metropolis with almost 500,000 inhabitants. Edinburgh Castle towers high above the city and offers a breathtaking view. The famous Royal Mile leads from here to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. If you like, you can enjoy the view of Edinburgh Castle from Calton Hill - great in the early morning too. A stroll through the enchanting Dean Village is also worthwhile. Overnight stay in Edinburgh.
-
Day 12: Departure
You ride back to Newcastle (approx. 200 km). If you choose the coastal route (+ 25 km), you will pass Alnwick Castle. It was used as a filming location for the Harry Potter films. Embarkation and departure (approx. 17.00 hrs) in the direction of Amsterdam. Overnight stay on board.
