Description
Geographically, it is located at the Tropic of Capricorn and is thus comparable to Central Australia in terms of landscape. The trip also follows our 'Australian pattern', with a support vehicle, roadbook, camping, and evenings around the campfire under the Southern Cross. For those who have already been to Australia or do not want to travel quite so far and long, Namibia is more than an alternative to the 5th continent.
Besides the camping option, there is also the possibility -at your own expense on-site- to go to alternative accommodation, e.g. bungalow, cottage, lodge, etc.
Namibia is the second least populated country in the world but offers unique wildlife. About two and a half times the size of Germany, only 2.3 million people live here. The official language is English, although a surprising number of people speak German due to the former German colony. Most of the roads are well-developed gravel roads, so that boredom never arises when riding a motorcycle. The daily stages are based on the sights during the day and are about 180-300km.
Tour itinerary:
Day 1: The tour starts in the capital Windhoek. Here we stroll through the hustle and bustle and familiarize ourselves with the African mentality, take care of formalities, errands, such as money exchange, phone cards, sun, and mosquito repellent, buy biltong (dried meat) or similar for the road because the next day we go into the 'bush' to Omaruru.
Day 3 and 4 will take us to Etosha National Park. Motorcycles are not allowed in the park and during game safaris, we quickly realize why. Besides springbok, antelope, wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe, we are likely to see elephants, cheetah, lions, and rhinos.
On the evening of the 5th day, we will be at the world cultural heritage Twyfelfontein, which has gained importance through its rock paintings. On the way to Uis, with its rustic pub, we get to know the traditional inhabitants of the country, the Damara and San, during a demonstration.
On day 7 we reach the Atlantic coast, also called the Skeleton Coast. From there we continue to Swakopmund, where we can knock off the desert dust.
We stay two days in this charming town. Time to cultivate (again), to go on boat trips or quad safaris or just to stroll through the city and along the sea, or to visit a cozy beer garden right away.
Recovered and refreshed we will go to Sesriem on the 9th day. The attraction there is the Sossusvlei. An unreal landscape, with enormous dunes, in the middle of the Namib desert, which is also the oldest in the world. Motorcycles are not allowed there either, so we will use a shuttle service for the half-day excursion. The Sesriem Canyon is no less interesting and rounds off our 10th day with impressions.
On the 11th day, our dust plumes again into the plains, there are 250km of the bush track ahead of us before we get to the 'city' of Aus. The next morning we have the opportunity to ride to Lüderitz, 125km to the west, where the Namib Desert 'reclaims' the former town of Kolmanskop. A whimsical place that only gives you an idea of what life must have been like back then.
The Tirasberge is a jewel in the desert and the evening at the campfire, after a 'sundowner', we marvel at the starry sky.
On the 13th day, we ride over gravel passages to Mariental, which has the Hardap Dam to offer as a sight.
On the last day, we have the chance to dust ourselves off again on almost 300km before we reach Windhoek. At dinner together in the restaurant, we can again exchange our impressions, what we have seen, experienced, and perceived where in this fantastic country.
