18 Day Adventure Motorcycle Tour from Victoria Falls to Cape Town.
The trip starts at ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ – the mighty Victoria Falls. From Zimbabwe, we venture onto the lesser travel gravel roads across Botswana and into ‘The Land of the Brave’, crossing the entire length of Namibia and down the Western regions of South Africa to finish in the Mother City: Cape Town.
You’ll ride some of the best gravel routes in the world, camp in safari tents under the most incredible star-filled skies, witness LOTS of big game from the seat of your motorcycle, stay in some seriously cool & unique accommodation and enjoy many epic feasts. You’ll ride over mountain passes and along one of the World’s most beautiful coastal roads.
Our Cape Town – Victoria Falls route is already epic. This return route takes things to the next level and leaves no stone unturned, venturing onto the gravel routes for that added layer of adventure. For experienced riders looking for serious adventure. This is the one.

Tour Itinerary:
DAY 1: Arrive at Victoria Falls - Welcome to Zimbabwe!
Welcome to Zimbabwe!
You will fly into Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) where you will be met by your driver and transported on the short journey to your accommodation for the night. If you’ve never been to Southern Africa, oh boy, are you in for a treat! In fact, even if you have been here before, you’re still in for a treat!
In the afternoon we’ll meet at the bar to hold the welcome talk, safety briefing, introduce you to the support team and your bikes. Once we’re all sorted there, we will get transferred to the boat deck in time for sundowners on the river followed by a delicious welcome dinner on a helipad (what, you’ve never gone for dinner on a helipad before?) which overlooks the Victoria Falls Bridge. Not a bad way to spend your first evening in Zim!

DAY 2: Victoria Falls - The Smoke That Thunders
Well, there’s just no way we can embark on a motorcycle tour titled ‘Victoria Falls to Cape Town’ without visiting the beast itself!
After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll venture over to the falls… This place will blow your mind! It’s one of those places that just boggles the mind.
After the falls, the day is yours to spend at your leisure. There are so many things you can do here… Take a helicopter trip over the falls, go canoeing, white water rafting, bungee jump, boat trips… One activity we can strongly recommend is the ‘Through the Eye of an Elephant‘ experience – it’s a great and responsible way to get up close & personal with the massive beasts!

DAY 3: Victoria Falls - Botswana - Elephant Sands 265km
With Victoria Falls ticked off the bucket list, we can now get down to the riding!
It’s about 100kms to get to the Pandamatenga Border Post. A little bit of gravel in the morning and then an interesting road that will more than likely have some wild game wandering near the roads.
Then it’s a fresh stamp in the passport and into Botswana! While we wouldn’t go as far to say the Zimbabwe border post is a well-oiled machine, there is at least some oil present… When we get to the Botswana side the road tax system can sometimes be a slow and painful process. While we take care of this, you will be free to skip off and enjoy a nice picnic lunch we prepared earlier.
On the other side, we have a lovely stretch of 150km on beautiful blacktop tar. It’d be a good idea to go to the bathroom back at the border, as this section of road is frequented by lions, elephants, and giraffes. Keep your eyes peeled and you may just see Mufassa chilling under a tree right next to the road.
Tonight we’re camping (is that really what you want to read right after we mention lions?!)… but not just any camp: Elephant Sands camp ‘where elephants rule’. This place is simply incredible! There are free-roaming elephants throughout the site and lodge, which we can all agree is pretty damn special.
In case you’re wondering, our tents are the big safari-style tents and are on stilts, so you don’t have to worry about your head being stepped on by a 6 tonne beast in the middle of the night.
Tonight we’ll enjoy a roaring campfire with a braai (BBQ) for dinner.

DAY 4: Elephant Sands - Nata 90km
Suitably rested after a night spent sleeping among elephants, we’ll have a leisurely start and enjoy the incredible surroundings a bit longer.
After a mid-morning breakfast, we’ll bid our farewells to the "ellyfunks" and jump back on the bikes. If yesterday was elephant-themed, today is all about flamingos.
Our aim today is to get to Makgadikgadi Pans & a little village called Nata. As we leave the camp we must battle through some proper sand riding for 20km to get back to ‘lion road’. Then it’s an easy ride on the tarmac through to Nata.
It’s a short distance today but this afternoon's destination is just spectacular! We’ll arrive at the accommodation early afternoon, have a quick drink & freshen up and hop back on the bikes for another 20km ride to Nata Bird Sanctuary at Makgadikgadi Pans. This is the spot where the big flamingo sightings happen (as in there is a vast number of them – the birds themselves aren’t unusually large). We will bring packed lunches with us for a nice picnic and spend a couple of hours enjoying the sights.

DAY 5: Nata - Okavango Delta - Maun 385km
Today we head for Maun on the paved roads. There are no gravel routes today, but you’ll still need to stay alert as there will be plenty of wild animals and rough sections of the road. When it comes to lunchtime, we’ll select our favorite big tree, check for lions and settle down for another al fresco picnic.
This afternoon we’ll stop off at the local airport and board a small plane to take a scenic flight over the largest inland delta in the world – the Okavango Delta! The vast flood plains stretch as far as the eye can see, the wetland landscape is seemingly woven together with marshes, lagoons, islands, and streams. Hippos, crocs, and buffalo occupy the waters while impala, zebra, wildebeest, and elephants roam the tracks that criss-cross the higher grounds. There is simply no better way to appreciate the vastness of this stunning region than by witnessing it from the air!
Back on the ground, sticking with our apparently ‘animal-themed’ tour, tonight we will be staying at the Crocodile Camp Safari & Spa just before town… Thankfully though, crocodiles do not roam freely around this camp. We’re here for two nights, so kick the boots and get comfy! You can get a massage here too… Although we’d suggest you may appreciate it more after tomorrow’s ride than tonight.

DAY 6: Maun Safari Ride Out 200km
Today is our crazy ‘bike safari day’ and it is an absolute smasher!
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll hop on the bikes for a 20km stretch of tarmac. We then hit a bit of gravel before reaching the ‘animal control gate’. This is where we ensure all our affairs are in order as we will be heading into the wilderness of Botswana.
Through the gate, we will encounter some really sandy and seriously challenging sections – but it will be well worth it! There are also some little villages along the way, with people living within the conservancy and animals roaming freely through the villages.
We’ll certainly see buffalos, elephants, zebras and giraffes and, with a bit of luck, lions. There are wild animals everywhere and it’s just a spectacular, crazy day. Expedition leader Henk describes it as ‘the best day of anybody’s life on a motorcycle. This is coming from the man who got trapped in this very game reserve between a flooded road and a herd of elephants!
The riding is not seriously challenging all of the time though. There are some tricky parts here and there but struggling a little on your bike through a sandy patch with an elephant looking on is quite an experience! To make it clear there are 0 fences here and no barriers between you and the said elephant. (Apropos of nothing, please don’t forget to sign our liability waivers before the ride!). So you know we’re serious, we’re hiring an armed ranger to come along in our support vehicle for this day… While the animals should not be a threat if we keep a sensible distance, we certainly need to take precautions – it’s no joke out here.
Once we’ve stopped off in a local village for a picnic lunch (safety in numbers and all that) it will then be time to turn our faithful steeds around and head back towards the Crocodile Camp, dodging giraffes and zebras in the road along the way.
Back at the accommodation, the beer at the riverside bar will never have tasted so good!

DAY 7: Maun - Tsumkwe 410km
Today we shall enjoy our last day in Botswana and really take in the sights, the numerous little villages, and everything else we shall be passing.
We’ll depart early, starting with a short section of gravel out to the tarmac. This next section of road is just beautiful – on one side you’ve got the proper African bushveld and on the other, you have got the tailing off of the Makgadikgadi Pans.
We then turn North in the direction of Angola and for the next 100kms, we have lots of potholes to contend with. With them comes traffic dodging – often riding on the wrong side of the road – so we definitely need to keep the speed down here. Lots of farm animals as well of course! This is Africa don’t forget but the scenery is however spectacular.
Once we reach Nokaneng it is again time to ‘pick a tree’ and we will stop just outside the small town for lunch. We’ve got to keep our strength up as the next stretch on gravel is a little challenging, with sections of potholes and rough bits. There’s lots of game in this section and we’ll see elephants and possibly lions. Again there are no fences so we must stay alert!
It’s about 130kms to get to the Namibian border, which will probably be the most remote border crossing you will ever see!
Welcome to Namibia! For the final stretch of riding, we will ride through the Bushman area! Steeped in history, it’s certainly an interesting place.

DAY 8: Tsumkwe - Waterberg Plateau 440km
Today we are on gravel for the entire day and are heading towards Waterberg Plateau National Park.
The scenery will be vastly different to what we have experienced in Botswana. No more dense bushveld and trees. While it’s a big gravel road, we’re now in the heart of the Kalahari desert, so the conditions will get a little rough and sandy in places. Wild game roams freely, only this will now be the beautiful eland, springbok, and oryx.
Our accommodation for the day is a lovely little lodge, where relatively tame mongooses (not ‘mongeese’) and possibly warthogs patrol the site, waiting for the opportunity to steal your food. It is a really nice place to get up early the next morning and just enjoy the birds and the wildlife.

DAY 9: Waterberg Plateau - Windhoek 300km
Today we have a mixture of a little bit of gravel and a little bit of tar. It’s a stunning day with a little bit of highway in the morning and some patches of gravel throughout.
We’ll ride out to the Wilhelmstal, a little roadside farm stall that is super popular for its biltong and droëwors. We’ll stop here for lunch before the final 170km to reach our evening’s accommodation.
The road almost all the way into Windhoek is a super remote, stunning little jeep track that feels just like a little farm road – it’s awesome! Then it’s a quick hop onto a big gravel road for the final 20km.
Our lodge for the day is just stunning and we’ll arrive in good time to enjoy a game drive and sundowners.

DAY 10: Windhoek - Swakopmund 330km
Today begins with a thrilling mountain pass through the Khomas Highlands, descending into the Namib desert. The immense landscape of endless distant hills and fleeting wildlife will undoubtedly impress. Before we reach Swakopmund we will take a fun little detour towards Goanikontes. This route runs along the river into Swakopmund and is a little bit technical and sandy, so it’s an exhilarating end to a great day of riding!
We’ll aim to arrive early in the afternoon so that you have some free time as here you’ll have the option of boat rides, quad rides, and lots of other things to do in and around town.
The evening is yours to spend at your leisure, although we strongly recommend we all head for sunset drinks on the sand dunes overlooking the ocean before heading back to have a restaurant dinner at the German brewhouse. It’s a really cool place with a nice vibe and good beers.

DAY 11: Swakopmund - Namib Desert 390km
Today we are heading out of Swakopmund and making our way into the Namib Desert! We’ve got about 390kms to do almost all of it on really nice gravel roads with a few patches of sand and tar and some exciting bits in between.
We’ll grab an early breakfast, get on the bikes and make our way into the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Now, this is a proper dessert, with big open sandy patches, alongside sand dunes and some incredible views.
Then we’ll ride over the Kuiseb Pass which is just stunning and we’ll stop at the top for a quick drink at a viewpoint where you’ve got this beautiful, expansive, flat view in front of Walvis Bay.
On to Solitaire, we’ll stop at a quirky petrol station for a decent coffee and some delicious apple pie. We then take a slight detour on another gravel mountain pass, the ‘Spreetshoogte Pass’. It’s a really nice, sweeping road with lots of flowing turns through the valley and is well worth the extra few km ride just for the viewpoint at the top.
Back down the mountain, with big fat smiles on our faces, we head for our accommodation nearby Sossusvlei. We’re in a truly spectacular spot tonight; the scenery is amazing, there’s lots of wildlife and we’ll set up a nice campfire to enjoy the sunset by. We love it out here, it’s truly awesome!

DAY 12: Namib Desert - Sossusvlei - Betta 150km
Sossusvlei – the literal translation of which is ‘Dead End Marsh’ – is a remote salt pan surrounded by towering red dunes. Sossusvlei is home to some of the world’s tallest sand dunes, where almost no rain falls and blackened camel thorn trees are the only sign that water does occasionally flow here. It’s a truly special place with an almost eery, alien landscape feel to it.
We’ll hop in a shuttle bus (we’re unfortunately not allowed to ride bikes within the vlei) and venture into the park where we’ll spend about an hour getting some incredible photos and just generally having a play in the dunes.
We will then make our way back for lunch before heading towards our accommodation for the night at Betta Camp. We’ve got about 150km to go from here on mostly good gravel roads with a couple of corrugated sections and definitely some tricky sandy patches, but it’s well worth it for the riding and scenery.
Tonight’s accommodation is a very remote and quirky place, right out in the sticks. We’ll fire up the braai and enjoy an evening under the star-filled sky in this arid wilderness.

DAY 13: Betta - Aus 450km
We’ll have a smasher of a day today and we head back towards the coast... It’s about 450kms, 250 odd will be really fast tar, the rest of which will be on gravel.
The scenery is just stunning out there this morning. On the left side of the road is this beautiful flowy mountain range and there’ll be red dunes scattered across the landscape – it’s simply beautiful. We’ll more than likely witness oryx, zebra, ostrich, springbok, and maybe the odd kudu if we get lucky.
The morning section of this day is just super fun riding – possibly one of the nicest little sections in the whole southern part of Namibia. We’re then onto a slightly better condition road, almost all the way to our destination for the night: Aus.
Depending on our arrival time, we will aim to head straight through to Luderitz. Here we can grab a nice fishy lunch overlooking the industrial harbor before making our way back to our accommodation in Aus. It’s a quick ride back but it will be windy with a bit of sandblasting as we leave the coast.
For those of you that want to explore more after lunch, there’s an abandoned old mining town we can swing by, with buildings being swallowed up with sand.
The restaurant at the lodge is on the top floor and has an amazing view, so we’ll be able to watch a stunning sunset from there. On a totally unrelated note, there’s an old car filled with bullet holes from a diamond heist gone wrong which is pretty interesting to look at!

N.B. If some of you are tired from a tough morning’s ride and want to avoid the exfoliating ride back from Luderitz, you have the option to cut the day short and stay at the accommodation, grabbing lunch there rather than riding on to Luderitz.

DAY 14: Aus - Fish River Canyon - Orange River 395km
Today we’re heading to the Fish River Canyon and the Orange River. It’s easy riding today, most of which is on the tarmac.
Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and we’ll stop at a lovely viewpoint to take in the breathtaking scenery. 27km wide in places and 550m deep, it’s one of those views that makes you feel like a dot on the landscape. Just awesome.
We finish the day at a beautiful lodge set on the banks of the Orange River, with South Africa looking at us from the other side. It’s a wonderful place to spend your final evening in Namibia!

DAY 15: Orange River - South Africa - Vanrhynsdorp 435km
Get your passports at the ready, for today we reach South Africa! It’s an awesome day on tar today and we start the day with a quick blip down the highway to the border post. It’s generally a pretty smooth process to leave Namibia, so we’ll be back up to full cruising speed in South Africa in time.
It’s really easy riding on big smooth roads as we cruise down the N7, taking in the pleasant South Africa scenery as we go.
We’re staying at a lovely little lodge this evening. They’ve got some lekker (South African for ‘awesome’) little cabins and a stunning restaurant – a really nice place to relax for an evening.

DAY 16: Vanrhynsdorp - Cederberg 225kms
Once we’re fed and watered we’ll jump onto the bikes leaving Vanrhynsdorp behind as we head off to the home of leopards and rooibos tea: The Cederberg. We’ll stop off en route and stop off in Clanwilliam as there’s a lady that runs a nice Rooibos Teahouse where we’ll have the chance to learn about the history of tea manufacturing in the area.
The ride into the Cederberg is simply stunning and you’ll quickly start to feel that you’re in no man’s land. Beautiful sandstone formations are lining the gravel route and to really send you back in time, we’ll stop by to take a look at the local caveman paintings! We pass through Wupperthal – a small town frozen in time – and visit a waterfall.
It’s a great day on all fronts: great scenery, great riding, and great accommodation for the evening.
Tonight we’ll stay in a beautiful lodge out in the middle of nowhere. One of our team will man the braai and cook up a massive feast, South African style while you guys can relax with a cold beer and soak up the peaceful surroundings!
We’ll have seen some incredibly starry skies on our travels, but we feel there’s something really special about the star-filled skies of the Cederberg. It’s our last night out in the wilderness, so it’ll surely be quite a special evening.

DAY 17: Cederberg - Cape Town 370km
Our last riding day! In true expedition style, we’ve got quite a banger of a day lined up for you. We’ll head down to the main lodge for a fry-up overlooking the lake before putting on our helmets one last time for the final leg of the journey.
We head off along the gravel road back to civilization (depending on the group, if you are keen for more gravel we can take a little detour to add about 20km extra of the rough stuff for you). We’ll hit Ceres and then ride over the mountain at Du Toitskloof Pass. We’ve got a stunning road on our way into Stellenbosch before heading towards the coastal roads and Simon’s Town. Here we’ll stop for a picnic lunch with the local penguin colony at Boulders Beach, before climbing into the hills for an exhilarating ride past Silvermine Nature Reserve.
More stunning riding from here on out as we ride along the beautiful coastal roads around the Cape Peninsula and of course, the world-famous Chapman’s Peak Drive. We then have the final stretch past Camps Bay as we head to our final destination.
Our hotel is conveniently located close to the V&A waterfront where we will head for celebratory drinks and a farewell dinner. Cape Town is a wonderfully vibrant city and the perfect place to end your South African motorcycle adventure.

DAY 18: Departure - Transfer to the Airport
Southern Africa = Complete!
Sadly this incredible adventure has come to end but for those of you yet to have your fill, the party doesn’t have to stop here. Cape Town is an amazing place so why not stay for a couple more days to really get to know the city, its shops, restaurants, nearby vineyards, and beautiful beaches.
For those of you who must leave for the real world today, we’ll say our farewells here and provide transfers to the airport.
