Motorcycles: During this trip, we ride Honda CRF 250 cc rental motorcycles.
Tour character: During this motorcycle tour through Tanzania we do not get to considerable heights. The daily tours are sometimes long, but well attainable. On the way, we have time and the possibility to stop and take pictures or visit villages. You should feel comfortable on dirt roads, but you don't need to be a pro. We ride an average of 6 to 8 hours a day in temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees.
Off-road: This trip is suitable for any healthy motorcyclist who is not afraid to go off-road. We alternately follow the paved main roads and then regularly swerve onto narrow side roads. For about 75% of the route we ride on dirt roads and tracks, sometimes going over rocks, and sand, through the mountains, and over the savannah. Offroad experience is necessary. Basic offroad training is very useful as preparation. It teaches you how to best handle your motorcycle off-road. It will certainly increase your riding pleasure. The motorcycles are light and handy enduros, perfect for dirt tracks. Even though we do a lot of off-roading, the focus of our trips is on getting to know the country and its people, so you don't need to be a pro.
Overnight stays: During this guided motorcycle tour we stay in comfortable mid-range hotels, resorts, or tented camps where tents, towels, and bed linen are included.
Climate: Tanzania is located near the equator, so it is pleasantly warm all year round with temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees. Of course, this depends on the altitude and location where you are. In some regions, it also cools down significantly during the day in the Tanzanian winter, such as in the Usambara Mountains. The climate in Tanzania is determined by two dry periods and rainy seasons. The best time for safaris is from June to September and from December to February. During these two dry seasons, there is little water in most game parks and the animals stay close to the remaining waterholes. Most rain is expected from late March to early June and from mid-November to mid-December.
Clothing: A helmet is mandatory, as well as protective clothing with protectors, good gloves, and boots or sturdy, high shoes. Because of the heat, it is recommended to wear breathable protective clothing. Because of the dust, bring a good pair of goggles.
Travel documents: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. The visa for Tanzania must be applied for before the start of the trip via an online system and currently costs USD 50 for a single entry. Further information can be found here: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa If you are not a German citizen, you should contact the embassy about possible deviating entry regulations. An international driver's license is required.
Health: The German Foreign Office recommends checking and completing the standard vaccinations according to the current vaccination calendar of the Robert Koch Institute for adults on the occasion of a trip (see http://www.rki.de). For direct entry from Germany to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, no compulsory vaccinations are required, in particular no yellow fever vaccination. This also applies when entering in transit via a yellow fever endemic area, as long as the stopover does not involve leaving the airport and the stay is less than 12 hours. In case of entry from a yellow fever area (e.g. neighboring countries), proof of a valid yellow fever vaccination is required. Inform yourself in time with a medical specialist.
Difficulty: Demanding tour with sometimes difficult dirt roads through sand or mud or rocky river crossings. Adventure and pioneering for you is an adventure, which you do not shy away from in any way. You move safely on unpaved roads. Other factors such as altitude, weather conditions, distances, or simple accommodations determine the difficulty of the tour. Extreme temperatures must be endured. Off-road experience is necessary so that you can move safely on gravel. Otherwise, however, you definitely need an off-road training.
-
pillion passengers: not possible
Pocket money (450 euros): This amount is an indication of how much money you will need for this trip. It includes food, drinks, souvenirs, optional excursions, and petrol.
-
Language: This offer is usually suitable for English and/or German speaking participants. Please enquire for language options.
Mobility: The offer is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Please contact us for more information.

Tour itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival - Arusha

You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro JRO airport and transferred to the hotel in Arusha where you will meet the group and tour guide. There will be a briefing about the guided motorcycle tour and you can explore Arusha.

-

Day 2: Arusha - West Kili

Early in the morning, we will leave Arusha as a motorcycle group and first ride on a paved road, we will take some trails near Mount Meru. In the morning we will have a break near Mererani Township. The roads are a mix of all terrains and some parts are challenging. Upon arrival at a hot spring, we will bathe and have lunch. After the break, we will continue to West Kilimanjaro where we will spend the night on a farm with guest rooms.

-

Day 3: West Kili - Lake Chala

We will leave the cattle and vegetable farm and ride from the leeward side of Kilimanjaro to the windward side. We hope to see both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, which are usually visible in the morning and evening. This is also a chance to pass by various Chagga tribes, considered the typical conservators of Kilimanjaro. We will stop for a picnic on the way and if we are lucky, we may see mountain primates such as black and white Colum bus monkeys and blue monkeys in the forest reserve. The ride will be on newly paved roads and dirt roads.

-

Day 4: Lake Chala - Same

After breakfast at Lake Chala, we leave the lodge heading south to the Pare Mountains. We ride on a winding, easy gravel road. After a lunch break, we continue on a gravel road to the border lake Jipe. We ride uphill to the Pare Mountains with a beautiful view of the small towns/villages in the hills. Until we reach the motel, we ride downhill on dirt roads with many sharp turns. This day is a rehearsal day for the next day where we will ride very intensively. The motel in Same has spectacular views of the South Pare Mountains and its location makes it the ideal gateway to Mkomazi National Park, the SouthPare Mountains, and Shengena Forest.

-

Day 5: Same - Lushoto

Today, sandy, hilly, and rocky trails await us. After breakfast, we will explore the mountain range of the Eastern Pare Mountains, where we will descend to the Southern ranges and will not find any paved roads. The road leads through untouched savannah to the Kalimawe Lake surrounded by rice plantations and small villages. The ride continues into the Mkomazi National Park area. After the lunch break, we start exploring the Usambara Mountains, the small villages of Mnazi and Mlalo, and the palm forests. We will ride up the zigzag road up the Usambara Mountains at Mtae(Mambo village) to over 2300 meters above sea level, from where we will have a unique view of the region. This is an exhausting day and we will all be tired at the end of this adventure and certainly deserve a cold beer and a rest.

-

Day 6: Lushoto - Simanjiro

The Maasai Steppe Conservancy is located between Tarangire National Park and Simanjiro Plains, within the Northern Safari Circuit. Safaris in the Maasai Steppe offers a wonderful, diverse experience for people seeking a combination of wildlife viewing and authentic, "unadulterated" cultural experiences with the Maasai people. The Maasai Steppe is a vital and important ecological support for the wildlife and people of northern Tanzania. Nearly 92% of this critical ecosystem is designated as Maasai village land, where cattle ranching is the main source of income. Maintaining healthy grazing areas is critical for both the Maasai and the wildlife that depend on this arid environment. Today, it's downhill zigzagging, up with less gravel and partly on asphalt.

-

Day 7: Simanjiro - Tarangire

This is a unique opportunity to experience and explore the Tarangire and Manyara ecosystems. The Maasai steppe provides a permanent refuge to move around the grasslands between Tarangire National Park and the village area. A visit to this area is a must for anyone interested in the evolution and origins of mankind as well as in explaining the Rift Valley and the bigger picture of Africa. It is a complete semi-desert experience. We stay overnight in a beautiful tented camp.

-

Day 8: Tarangire - Stay / Safari

Today we leave the motorcycles and go on a safari in Tarangire National Park by 4x4. Established in 1970 from former hunting grounds, the national park is home to the largest population of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. At around 2,600 km², it is one of the five largest parks in Tanzania and provides a "laid table" for predators all year round. One of its distinctive features is the population of mainland antelopes, such as the stately tufted-eared spike bucks and the graceful giraffe gazelle, which are found here in large numbers. Tarangire National Park is also known as the Park of Elephants, herds of up to 300 elephants paw around here.

-

Day 9: Tarangire - Lake Natron

Today will be rocky, dusty, and sandy, you will ride 165 km of gravel roads. The journey takes us east on winding gravel roads and out into the savannah landscape of the Maasai plains. We head towards the Great Rift Valley, at the base of which stands the mighty Ol Donyo Lengai volcano. Ol Donyo Lengai is an active volcano that last erupted in the 1970s. It is revered by the Maasai as the seat of their god "Ngai". Its almost perfect cone rises above an area of astonishing barren beauty. At the foot of the mountain is an area of stony desert. Here are the cones of small extinct volcanoes and Lake Natron, a huge soda lake that extends to the Kenyan border. Flamingos come here to breed, and in the late midday sun, the colorful flamingo colonies make a spectacular sight, adding a splash of color to the shimmering water.

-

Day 10: Lake Natron - Arusha

After a night under the incomparable African starry sky, you will wake up refreshed. After a hearty breakfast, you can take another hike to explore the gorge where our camp is located or ride to the hot springs, or to the shore of the lake to observe the flamingos up close. We return to Arusha that day and will take at least 6 hours to ride. We will return the rental bikes and enjoy a farewell dinner.

-

Day 11: Arusha - Departure

You will be transferred to the airport or you can decide to extend your trip. You could extend the trip with a safari round trip to Serengeti and Ngorongoro or Zanzibar.

- Changes to the itinerary can be made to suit local conditions -.
