Rila, Pirin & the Balkan Range

The start is near Vienna, where the group comes together. The motorway leads past Budapest into Serbia and on into the south-west of Bulgaria – the heart of this route. A German-speaking guide rides with the group from Vienna to Budapest; in Bulgaria a local, also German-speaking, guide takes over. Along the way come the Rila Monastery, Belogradchik Fortress and guided city walks in Sofia and Plovdiv, before the way home leads back through Romania.

Highlights

Rila Monastery & Peaks

The stage rides into the Rila Mountains to the 1,000-year-old Monastery of St. Ivan of Rila, Bulgaria's most important monastery. Framed by the summit of Vihren, it is one of the most spectacular mountain stages of all.

Sofia and Plovdiv Culture

Two cultural cities on German-speaking guided walks: Plovdiv counts among the oldest cities in Europe, while Sofia blends European and oriental flair with thousands of years of history at the foot of Vitosha.

Winding Mountain Passes

Winding pass roads run through the Balkan range, past reservoirs and sandstone pyramids. Mostly excellent surfaces alternate with a few short, bumpier sections, which keeps every riding day varied.

Discover Veliko Tarnovo

On the way to Veliko Tarnovo you cross the Balkan Mountains on one of the country's most scenic passes. The former capital sits above the gorge of the Yantra river and impresses with striking architectural landmarks.

Balkan Range Twice Over

One stage crosses the Balkan Mountains twice, on routes that Bulgarian bikers hold in particularly high regard, before the way continues into Romania. Winding switchbacks and sweeping views define this riding day.
