Eilean Donan Castle
On the shore of Loch Duich stands the ancestral seat of Clan Macrae, known as a filming location for Highlander. It is among the most photographed castles in Scotland and lies on the way to the west coast.
Edradour and Glenfiddich
The Whisky Trail takes in Edradour, the smallest distillery in the country, and as its counterpart the large Glenfiddich Distillery. The Speyside Cooperage, a working barrel-maker, is worth a stop along the way.
Single Track Roads
The northwest of the Highlands is thinly settled: narrow single track roads run through empty country and along the ragged west coast, with passing places instead of oncoming traffic and a great deal of quiet.
Castles and Stones
The day loop out of Ballater links Dunnottar Castle above the sea, the stone circle at Easter Aquhorthies, the Maiden Stone and Craigievar Castle, with winding roads through the Cairngorms National Park in between.
Isle of Mull and Glenfinnan
The day on the Isle of Mull runs along narrow coastal roads. On the way lies the Glenfinnan Viaduct, known from several Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express crosses the arched bridge above the glen.
