Durmitor, Tara Gorge & Kotor: 9 Balkan Days

The start is at the agreed meeting point near Graz, and from here the way heads south. The majority of the 540 kilometres runs on the motorway, before the first Balkan specialities await over a relaxed dinner in the Bosnian hinterland. Overnight in Zenica.

The way continues south to the Montenegrin border. Riding through Durmitor National Park up to 1,900 metres above sea level is the highlight of the day. Overnight in Zabljak, the highest-lying town in Montenegro.

The roads in Durmitor National Park impress once more, before Kolasin, the country's best-known ski resort, is reached in the afternoon. Depending on mood, two route variants are available. First of two nights in Kolasin.

Luggage-free, the way heads to Europe's deepest canyon, right through the region around Durmitor National Park. Anyone who wishes can look down on the famous Djurdjevica Bridge from the optional zip line. Second night in Kolasin.

The return to the Adriatic passes Lake Skadar, the largest lake on the Balkan peninsula, and sections of the famous Jadranska Magistrala coastal road. The next two nights are spent at the same hotel in Becici.

A quieter day: the excursion leads into Lovcen National Park and the historic old town of Kotor, with plenty of time in the afternoon for beach life in Becici. Second night in Becici.

Winding roads bring the group back to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before dinner a walk leads across the UNESCO World Heritage Stari Most, the Old Bridge. Overnight in Mostar.

Kozarska Dubica in north-west Bosnia is the final overnight stop. In the evening the group raises a toast over a good meal to the finale, and everyone looks back once more on the experiences of the past days.

Led by the guide, the group covers 310 kilometres back to the starting point near Graz, where the nine days come to an end – with plenty of memories of winding Balkan serpentines and new friendships. Here the group goes its separate ways.
