Self-guided route over the Carpathian passes

This on-road route through the Carpathians begins in Timisoara, where you can park your bike safely or arrive by trailer. Between Vienna and Timisoara it is pure motorway, making the approach convenient even with a car and trailer. From there the route follows the Danube gorge at the Iron Gate, crosses the Carpathian foothills and continues to monasteries, castles and small towns of Transylvania. Every day a precise roadbook for self-guided riders takes you right to your hotel door, so you can focus entirely on the road.

Highlights

Transalpina & Urdele Pass

With "Big Mama" you climb the Urdele Pass Transalpina, the highest pass in the Carpathians. Endless switchbacks, sweeping panoramas and a summit feeling that makes every single kilometre worth the effort.

Danube Gorge at Iron Gate

In the morning an optional boat ride at the Iron Gate takes you to see King Decebal carved in stone, before the Danube gorge at the Iron Gate carries you along a remarkable stretch of riverside road.

Dracula's Castle Bran

A winding mountain road brings you to Bran Castle, Romania's famous Dracula's castle, with its merchant village, before the route continues to the charming cultural city of Sibiu and its old town.

Tismana & Targu Jiu

A stop at Tismana Monastery is part of the route, before you reach Targu Jiu to admire Constantin Brancusi's sculptures or unwind in a shaded beer garden and let the riding day come to a close.

Wellness in Timisoara

The Romanian base is a wellness hotel with pool, sauna and air conditioning – ideal for recharging before and after the winding Carpathian mountain stages and getting ready for the next leg.
