Transfagarasan, Transalpina & Transylvania

Start and finish of this Transylvania loop is the Apuseni Lodge in Avram Iancu – ten riding days through Transylvania and the Carpathians lie ahead. The route stays on tarmac throughout and follows winding country roads to historic towns such as Sibiu and Sighișoara, climbs the Transfagarasan route and the Transalpina stage, and carries on to the region around Târgu Jiu. An experienced guide accompanies the whole loop, so you can focus entirely on the riding and the scenery. Departure daily between 9 and 10 am.

Highlights

The Transfagarasan Pass

The Transfagarasan route is one of Europe's finest pass roads: 148 kilometres of curves, sweeping views of the Carpathians and, with a little luck, bears at the roadside make this the high point of it all.

The Transalpina Road

The Transalpina stage climbs Romania's highest paved pass, at around 2,100 metres through the Southern Carpathians. Panoramic views over valleys and peaks and cool mountain air make it a genuine experience.

Historic Old Towns

Sibiu and Sighișoara rank among Romania's most beautiful medieval towns. Narrow lanes and the famous Schäßburg citadel tell stories of Transylvanian history and draw you in the moment you arrive in them.

The Bicaz Gorge

The stretch along the Red Lake runs through the spectacular Cheile Bicazului with its rugged rock walls. Winding sections alternate with sweeping views over the Carpathians – a dream for any rider on two wheels.

Rest Day in Brasov

The free day invites you to catch your breath: stroll through the old town to the Black Church, visit Bran Castle, or meet the rescued bears at the nearby sanctuary before the Carpathians continue.

Itinerary

Stage 1

Day 1–10

Romania

A guided Transylvania loop starting and ending at the Apuseni Lodge – through Transylvania, the Carpathians, and over the legendary Transfagarasan and Transalpina passes.

Day 1 · Romania

Day 1: Start at Apuseni Lodge

The loop starts at the Apuseni Lodge Avram Iancu. Over 270 winding kilometres through the Apuseni Mountains, you will already get a taste on day one of what the coming week has in store, before we reach Cetatea Trascăului fortress in the evening.

Day 2 · Romania

Day 2: Alba Iulia – Sibiu

The route continues past Alba Iulia into Sibiu, the geographic centre of Romania. The old town with its medieval market square invites you to stroll and shop, before we spend the night here.

Day 3 · Romania

Day 3: Sighișoara

The Sibiu Sighisoara stage follows the southern Carpathians to Sighișoara. In the colourful upper town, there is plenty of time for the Schäßburg citadel, one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe.

Day 4 · Romania

Day 4: Ceahlău National Park

Today's stage covers 227 kilometres northeast to Ceahlau National Park. On the shore of Lake Izvorul Muntelui, right at the edge of the park, we spend the night surrounded by dense mountain forests.

Day 5 · Romania

Day 5: Bicaz Gorge – Brasov

The Bicaz gorge road follows Lake Izvorul Muntelui into the Hășmaș Mountains and through the Cheile Bicazului, past the Red Lake Cheile Bicazului over the Pângărați Pass to Gheorgheni, and down to Brasov.

Day 6 · Romania

Day 6: Rest Day in Brasov

The Brasov rest day is yours to spend freely: the Black Church, the peasant fortress of Râșnov, Bran Castle, or a visit to the bear sanctuary are popular options before Transylvania continues.

Day 7 · Romania

Day 7: Transfagarasan

Today the Transfagarasan route awaits us: 148 kilometres on Romania's second-highest mountain pass road, with photo stops and – if we are lucky – Carpathian bears at the roadside. An undisputed highlight.

Day 8 · Romania

Day 8: Transalpina – Târgu Jiu

The Transalpina stage takes us over Romania's highest paved pass road, at around 2,100 metres, through the Targu Jiu Southern Carpathians, where we spend the night after an impressive panoramic ride.

Day 9 · Romania

Day 9: Defileul Jiului – Sebeș

We cross the Carpathians a third time, this time through Defileul Jiului National Park, and reach Sebeș in the evening – a quiet stage before the final riding day.

Day 10 · Romania

Day 10: Hunedoara Castle – Return

To close out the ten days, the Hunedoara castle stop is known from international film productions, before winding roads carry us back to the Apuseni Lodge. Romania 10 days 2,200 km are complete.
