Self-guided from Málaga, two nights in Nerja

It opens in Málaga: pick-up at the airport, transfer to the hotel, and the next morning the handover of the rental machine with the briefing at 9 am. A sat nav with the daily routes loaded, a road book and maps are ready, and everything is ridden without a guide. The three stages run between 225 and 260 kilometres and lead through the Alpujarras to Nerja, up into the Sierra Nevada and on to Trevélez, and on the last day back over the Sierra Tejeda and the Montes de Málaga. Bookable from early September to the end of June.

Highlights

Curves of the Alpujarras

Narrow mountain roads run past almond trees and vineyards, with the deep blue Mediterranean opening up again and again. Behind stands the Sierra Nevada, still holding snow at 3,400 metres while the fields below are in flower.

The Parador of Nerja

Two nights in the long-established Parador right by the sea. A quiet retreat after the winding riding days, and at the same time the starting point for the loop up to the white villages of the Sierra Nevada.

The Village of Trevélez

Trevélez is the highest municipality in Spain, known for its air-dried Serrano ham. Narrow streets dating from the time of the Moors and wide views over the Sierra Nevada make the detour well worth taking.

Vía de la Cabra

The goat path between the Sierra Tejeda and the coast is the best-known switchback on the route: tight hairpins between gently rolling green hills and rugged rock faces that recall the Pyrenees more than Andalusia.

Montes de Málaga

To finish, the route winds through the Montes de Málaga nature park, with countless curves and wide panoramas over the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains, before dropping back into the city.
