The Heart of Africa Motorcycle Expedition: An Enduro Adventure through Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda & Kenya

For over twenty years, travelers have asked which African country stands out as the most beautiful. The Heart of Africa motorcycle tour reveals that a destination’s true allure lies in its people and history. This expedition offers an immersive encounter with Africa’s diversity—from the vibrant communities of Kenya and the haunting legacy of Rwanda’s genocide, to Uganda’s breathtaking landscapes and Tanzania’s unspoiled wilderness. This journey encompasses a thousand facets of Africa and ranks among the continent’s most remarkable motorcycle tours, second only to the Transafrika Expedition. To maintain an intimate experience, participation is limited to only six riders, hosted by OVERCROSS, specialists in adventure motorcycle tours.

Arrival in Kenya: Day 1

Participants typically arrive in Nairobi, Kenya, on overnight flights from Europe, touching down early morning at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. An OVERCROSS team member meets you at the airport and escorts you to the workshop where the Kibo rental motorcycles await. The day concludes with a group briefing at the hotel followed by dinner and a chance to rest before the adventure begins.

Exploring Kenya On- and Offroad: Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, the group departs Nairobi mid-morning, covering approximately 300 kilometers northward, crossing the equator en route. This initial riding day serves as an acclimatization phase, allowing riders to adjust to their machines and local traffic conditions. Along the way, a break at a traditional Kenyan roadside coffee stall offers an authentic cultural touch before the ride continues on mild offroad tracks toward the day’s camp near the Ugandan border.

Crossing into Uganda: Day 3

The expedition’s first border crossing introduces riders to Uganda, the heart of Africa. The convoy, including support vehicles, crosses smoothly into this vibrant country, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Riding Through Uganda: Day 4

Traveling on typical African roads toward Jinja, located on Lake Victoria where the Nile River begins, riders trace the origin of the world’s longest river. The Nile source, uncovered by explorers in 1862, is a highlight before entering bustling Kampala at sunset. The group navigates the city’s intense traffic and explores the capital’s nightlife in the evening.

Following Lake Victoria’s Shoreline: Day 5

The journey continues southwest along Lake Victoria’s shoreline, ascending into Uganda’s highlands, which reach elevations of up to 1,500 meters. The route passes through the Ruwenzori Mountains near the Congo border—a renowned region for trekking and natural beauty. After approximately 300 kilometers, the group sets up camp at Lake Mburo, enjoying a traditional campfire evening.

Toward the Congolese Border: Day 6

Approaching the Congo frontier, two significant parks harbor the last mountain gorillas. The team rides roads featuring numerous switchbacks and light offroad segments to reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is home to endangered mountain gorillas. Camp is established at the base of the Albertine Rift for a two-night stay.

Gorilla Safari in Bwindi National Park: Day 7

Participants may opt to rest or embark on a guided visit to Bwindi National Park, which shelters half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. This unique wildlife encounter also includes the possibility of seeing black-and-white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, chimpanzees, elephants, and various antelope species, providing a profound and memorable experience.

From Rwanda to the Congo Border: Day 8

At the foot of the Virunga volcanoes near the Congo border, riders navigate extended serpentines to reach Kisoro town. After a coffee break and restocking supplies, the group proceeds to the Rwanda border. Depending on timing, the route continues via the main road to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu or through the hinterland along the Congo border, offering spectacular lake vistas.

Journey to Rwanda’s Capital: Day 9

Leaving the rainforest behind, the expedition heads to Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, traversing scenic mountain passes. The route arrives at the iconic Hotel Rwanda, the setting of the 1994 genocide film based on Paul Rusesabagina’s heroic efforts to save over 1,200 people during the Tutsi genocide.

Reflecting on Rwanda’s Past: Day 10

After breakfast, the group visits the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the resting place for approximately 250,000 Tutsis, providing sobering insights into Rwanda’s tragic history. Following this poignant experience, riders traverse well-maintained asphalt roads. The journey continues across the border into Tanzania, where the final challenging 50 kilometers on rough roads concludes the day by a campfire, accompanied by wine and reflection.

Enduro Adventure Around Lake Victoria: Day 11

Riding typical African tracks along the Burundi border, this day delivers a true offroad enthusiast’s experience—dust, dirt, and possibly rain creating muddy conditions that test skill and endurance. The late afternoon brings arrival at a camp by Lake Victoria. Here, the group anchors motorcycles and embarks on a raft excursion, with fishing opportunities that may provide the evening’s fresh catch.

Riding Along Lake Victoria’s Eastern Shore: Day 12

Today’s route follows a straightforward paved road along the lake’s east side, covering kilometers steadily until reaching the Kenyan border. The expedition briefly skirts the Serengeti National Park, extending toward the Ngorongoro Crater and Great Rift Valley, before settling at a campground in time for sunset.

Challenging Offroad Day: Day 13

At first light, riders fire up their Kibo motorcycles for several hours of demanding offroad terrain en route to Kenya’s border. Upon crossing, a brief stop near the Masai Mara offers a refreshing break. The route then heads directly toward Naivasha Lake, bypassing the Masai Mara to conserve time.

Final Stretch to Nairobi: Day 14

The morning starts early with a departure at dawn for the concluding kilometers along secondary highways toward Nairobi. Upon arrival, the motorcycles are returned to the workshop for inspection. Later, riders are transferred to the airport, with the option to join a final evening gathering featuring barbecue and wine around the campfire.

This comprehensive motorcycle riding holiday provides an unparalleled exploration of East Africa’s cultural and natural landscapes. With expert guidance and attentive support, riders experience an authentic adventure motorcycle tour through some of the continent’s most unforgettable regions.
