Dover, Dartmoor & Land's End, 9 Days

It begins with boarding at Calais. After the crossing the White Cliffs of Dover greet you. Through the lonely flats of Romney Marsh the road runs on to Rye, one of the prettiest towns in southern England with its narrow lanes and half-timbered houses. A detour to Sandwich or Canterbury is worth the time. Night in or near Rye.

The route follows the south coast via Winchelsea and Hastings, where the Norman conquest began in 1066. At Eastbourne and Brighton the Victorian piers catch the eye, and at Arundel the castle is worth a detour. Through the South Downs National Park the way leads to Winchester and King Arthur's Round Table. Night in or near Winchester.

Through the New Forest you reach the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, or take the alternative past Stonehenge. From there the road runs on to Shaftesbury and into Dartmoor National Park, known for its wild, romantic landscape and free-roaming ponies. Night in or near Tavistock.

Today the quiet village of Charlestown and the fishing harbour of Mevagissey lie on the route. At St Mawes you follow the footsteps of Miss Marple and visit the fortress built by Henry VIII, before the road crosses the peninsula to the north coast. Night in or near Newquay.

A fine loop towards Penzance with views of St Michael's Mount and the Minack Theatre. It carries on to the southwesternmost point of the British Isles at Land's End, passing the Geevor Tin Mine and the artists' colony of St Ives. Night again in or near Newquay.

The legend of King Arthur is everywhere in Cornwall: the road leads to the ruins of Tintagel Castle high above the sea. The village of Clovelly, reachable only on foot, and the cliff railway between Lynmouth and Lynton round off the day. Night in or near Lynton.

South of the coast lies Exmoor National Park, with wild, romantic country and livestock roaming free at the roadside. Via Cheddar and the Roman baths of Bath the way carries on through the Cotswolds to Denham. Night in or near Denham.

The route leads to the royal castle at Windsor before carrying on through the quiet landscapes of Kent. Bodiam Castle and Dover Castle invite further stops, before the day ends back at the coast. Night in or near Dover.

The finish brings boarding at Dover and the crossing back to Calais. The White Cliffs stay in sight one last time before your own journey home begins from Calais. Behind you lie around 1,700 kilometres through southern England.
