Day 4: Sundsvall - Skellefteå

Continue northwards via the university town of Umeå, the "town of birches" and the cultural centre of northern Sweden, to Skellefteå. A cosy town in the north of Sweden, right on the edge of the magical region known as Swedish Lapland.

Overnight stay in the Skellefteå area

Day 5: Skellefteå - Rovaniemi

Our daily stage today leads us from Schwerden to Finland.

The stretch of coast between Skellefteå and Piteå is also known as the "Riviera of the North", as the picturesque coast is dotted with long sandy beaches and enchanting bays. Via Luleå we reach the Swedish-Finnish border at Haparanda/Tornio. Along the river Kemijoki we continue to Rovaniemi, the gateway to Lapland. Rovaniemi is known as the home town of Santa Claus.

Day 6: Rovaniemi - Karasjok

Day 7: Karasjok - North Cape

Today we reach the main destination of the journey, the North Cape

Over the Finnmarksvidda and along the Porsangerfjord we go to the North Cape island Magerøy to the North Cape Rock. In good weather a fantastic view over the Arctic Ocean.

The North Cape is not the northernmost point of Europe, but it is an important tourist destination. On the North Cape plateau, which rises steeply out of the sea for almost 300 m, there is an information centre - the so-called "North Cape Hall". There is a restaurant, an ecumenical chapel, historical exhibitions, souvenir shops and a post office where you can obtain a North Cape diploma stamped with the date of issue. In summer, there is the midnight sun for about two and a half months, while in winter the sun does not rise above the horizon during the day for about two and a half months.

Overnight stay in the Honningsvag area

Day 8: North Cape - Alta

Return to the mainland and through the Sennaland to Alta, famous for the Alta Canyon (only accessible on foot) and the up to 6000 year old rock paintings in the Alta Museum (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Continue via Kvænangsfjell to Storslett.

Overnight stay in the Alta area

Day 9: Alta - Tromsö

Along the beautiful Norwegian coast with more ferry passages we reach Tromsø. Tromsø is also known as "Paris the North" and lies 344 km as the crow flies north of the Arctic Circle. Tromsø is not only home to the northernmost university but also the northernmost cathedral in the world. The city has a number of sights, most of which are closely related to the subpolar location of the city or nature. Not a tourist attraction in the true sense of the word, but an almost unique feature of the city is the public road tunnel system that runs through the entire island below the city and has its own signposting and traffic guidance.

Overnight stay in the Tromsö area

Day 10: Tromsö - Lofoten

From Tromsö, the trip leads us to a further highlight of the Lofoten.

Lofoten is an archipelago off the coast of Norway, consisting of about 80 islands. The Lofoten Islands are located about 100 to 300 km north of the Arctic Circle in the Atlantic Ocean, separated from the mainland by the Vestfjord.
