The Glass Route along the border with the Czech Republic invites you to discover glass art in the typical style of the area. Depending on the development of the current pandemic situation, a tour through the nearby Czech Republic and the extensive forests of the nature park to the upper reaches of the Vltava is also possible. Tourers will get their money's worth here, the trip is also well suited for (re-)beginners with less experience.
Individual arrival at the first base hotel in Kulmbach.
We drive off the main roads through the picturesque and scenic Franconian Switzerland, turning away from Nuremberg towards Bayreuth, touching the Fichtelgebirge with Bad Berneck.
We drive east through the Fichtelgebirge and along the Czech border. In Mödlareuth we visit the remains of the former inner-German border, cross the Saale reservoir in southern Thuringia
Upper Franconia & Thuringian Forest.
We ride through rural Upper Franconia into the southern Thuringian Forest to reach the reservoir of Pöhl via a short detour into Saxony. We bypass Plauen to the north in the direction of the Saale valley and the Mauthaus valley back to Kulmbach.
On to Cham.
We leave the beer town of Kulmbach to drive through sparsely populated Upper Franconia and the northern Upper Palatinate to our second base hotel in Cham. In the afternoon we have time to visit the old town of Cham or relax at the hotel.
The route takes us through the Bavarian Forest towards the Bavarian-Austrian-Czech border triangle and along the traditional Glass Route through the Bavarian Forest National Park via the glassblowing town of Bodenmais back to the hotel.
Upper Palatinate Forest.
The route takes us through the Upper Palatinate Forest along the border to the Czech Republic and then in a wide arc around the restricted area of Grafenwoehr. Via Amberg and passing Schwandorf in the north, the route leads us back to Cham.
We change hotels for the last time, cross the central Upper Palatinate and have the opportunity to visit the Liberation Hall in Kehlheim on the Danube, can marvel at the Danube breakthrough only a short distance away and move through the historic Altmühltal into the Franconian Jura, where we spend the last evening of our trip in Treuchtlingen.
We leave the hotel and make our way home individually. Depending on the distance, it is possible to enjoy the small roads of the Franconian Jura with its limestone quarries. A stop in this traditional cherry region is always worthwhile.
