Description

...the ride then continues to Lake Baringo, a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley and home to a sizeable hippo and crocodile population. From Lake Baringo, we ride up the escarpment to West Laikipia towards Mugie Conservancy. Enjoy a morning ride from Mugie to Malesso – the villagers here call the area the end of the world – the views are spectacular. From Mugie, we ride back to our base at Soysambu.

Daily stages:

Day 1 - Arrival in Nairobi. You will be picked up at the airport and transfer to the Tamarind Tree Hotel. Overnight stay at the Tamarind Tree Hotel, Nairobi

Day 2 - Early morning departure from Nairobi. Approximately a three-hour drive to Punda Milias Camp. Here you will get to know your riding crew. After the briefing on the motorcycles and safety rules - it´s time to ride! We go explore the surrounding hills with beautiful views of the lakes and ride in the Eburu forest. Overnight at the Punda Milias Camp.

Day 3 - Full day out and about exploring Soysambu Conservancy. The Conservancy is home to plenty of plains game, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, as well as buffalos amongst other animals. Riding on and around the conservancy is unbelievably beautiful and seeing the animals from the seat of your motor bike is an experience of a lifetime. Option of a picnic lunch out, or lunch back at camp. There are plenty of routes we can ride, the whole area offers different terrains and different levels of riding – from intermediate to more technical riding. Overnight Punda Milias Camp.

Day 4 - After breakfast, ride from Punda Milias Camp to Lake Baringo. This ride takes us through sisal plantations, down to Maji Moto and on to Kampi Ya Samaki at Lake Baringo. About 200 km and 5 hours of riding. Leave the bikes on the mainland and take the boat across to Island Camp. Overnight at Island Camp that is located on an island in Lake Baringo.

Day 5 - Early morning boat ride to see hippos and crocodiles, after which we prepare for the day's ride. Ride up into the hills to Kabartonjo and Karbarnet. Enjoy the incredible views and enjoy a traditional meal out. After lunch a short ride back to Island Camp. Overnight at Island Camp.

Day 6 - From the Rift Valley we ride up the escarpment and onto the Western Laikipia Plateau. We arrive at Mugie Conservancy where we will stay at the Mugie camping site. Along the way – hopefully sightings of elephants and plains game. Ride around after lunch. Overnight at the camping site.

Day 7 - Morning ride to Malesso – the sights here are unbelievable. The terrain changes from black cotton to red soil, and we ride north through small-scale farms and villages. After a picnic lunch, ride back to the camping site. Option of further exploring the surrounding hills. Overnight at the Mugie camping site.

Day 8 - After breakfast, depart Mugie and ride to Rumuruti, then back into the highlands of Nyaharuru. From here we drop back into the Great Rift Valley and back to Soysambu Conservancy – Overnight at Punda Milias Camp.

Day 9 - Mid-morning departure to Nairobi by road (in vehicles). Optional visit to the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum. Drop off at JKIA for your international flight home.

Our conservation work

We are committed to protecting the communities, wildlife, and environment that we ride in. The conservancy fees that are charged to the clients are used to support the conservancy areas in which we ride, which sustain the wildlife and communities that live in these areas. We are also in the position to raise money for funding special projects. In our HQ at the Soysambu Conservancy, we have facilitated de-snaring projects. Snares are a major threat to wildlife populations through poaching and these projects that we support are critical to protecting their wildlife populations.

In the past, we have raised money to support the world-renowned David Sheldrick Trust that is known for its rescue and rehabilitation programs for orphaned elephants.

We have also held fundraisers to build predator-proof "bomas", which are designed to reduce livestock and wildlife conflict and, as they are designed to be mobile, they are great for sustainable rangelands management and enhancing grass production.

Our crew equally volunteers at the Mugie Triathlon for route opening and closing as a safety precaution to protect both the wildlife and the competitors. They ensure that there are no buffalo or elephants on the routes during the competition. This also helps raise money for a mobile community clinic serving the Western side of Laikipia.
