From the equator to the South Atlantic

Thanks to support from TOURATECH and YAMAHA, this one-way tour from the equator to the South Atlantic, around 5,000 kilometres away, is possible for a handful of adventurers. Your Africa enduro expedition starts south of the equator line in Nairobi, before heading straight into Tanzania. From there you cross Malawi and Zambia; in southern Africa, Botswana's Okavango basin and Namibia with Walvis Bay await as the goal. We run this journey of discovery deliberately as an expedition, with all the uncertainties of different climate zones and borders. A solid level of travel and enduro experience is required.

Highlights

Start in Nairobi

Your enduro expedition begins south of the equator in Nairobi on the YAMAHA Tenéré 700 Rally. From here it runs around 5,000 kilometres due south, straight across six countries to the South Atlantic.

Tanzania & Kilimanjaro

At the foot of Kilimanjaro you reach Arusha, with an optional safari into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest intact caldera ecosystems on Earth. An early highlight of this East Africa enduro expedition.

Camp at Lake Malawi

After long enduro days on laterite tracks through tea, mango and banana plantations, you pitch your camp on the shore of Lake Malawi, the warm heart of Africa, before the route continues toward Zambia.

Zambia & Victoria Falls

Along the Lower Zambezi you reach Livingstone and Victoria Falls, with a possible rest day at Mosi-oa-Tunya. A turning point of this Trans-Africa motorcycle expedition, before continuing into Botswana.

Botswana & Namibia

Over the Zambezi you reach Botswana, where four countries meet at Kazungula, home to the largest elephant population in Africa. Namibia, the land of the San, closes out your trip at Walvis Bay.

Kenya
Stage 1

Day 1

Kenya

Your Nairobi to Namibia motorcycle tour starts south of the equator in Kenya, along the East African Rift, through savannahs with acacias and diverse wildlife.

Day 1: Nairobi - start of the equator enduro trip
Day 1 · Kenya

Day 1: Nairobi - start of the equator enduro trip

The YAMAHA Tenéré Rally stands ready to go, at camp the preparation for the coming 5,000 kilometres is underway: 'Go south!'. Your Nairobi to Namibia motorcycle tour follows the roughly 6,000-kilometre East African Rift through a country with over 40 ethnic groups. Along the Kenyan savannahs, acacias, low sun and huge herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope accompany you between the Serengeti and Masai Mara. A spectacle is the crossing of the Mara River, where the crocodiles already wait.

Tanzania
Stage 2

Day 2

Tanzania

On the Nairobi to Namibia motorcycle tour you cross the border into Tanzania, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, with an optional safari into the UNESCO-protected Ngorongoro Crater.

Day 2: Arusha - enduro stage at Kilimanjaro
Day 2 · Tanzania

Day 2: Arusha - enduro stage at Kilimanjaro

You cross the border post from Kenya into Tanzania and already see Kilimanjaro from afar, with its 5,985-metre Kibo summit. This stage of your Africa enduro expedition leads to the foot of the mountain at Arusha, where you take time for the town or a safari into the Ngorongoro Crater, home to around 25,000 large mammals and a high density of predators. After freshly brewed plantation coffee, a long enduro day awaits along the Kizigo and Usungu game reserves.

Malawi
Stage 3

Day 3–4

Malawi

Malawi, the warm heart of Africa: on this Africa enduro expedition you ride laterite tracks through tea, mango and banana plantations down to Lake Malawi.

Day 3: Malawi - on and off the road
Day 3 · Malawi

Day 3: Malawi - on and off the road

By now the enduro group is a well-rehearsed border team, and online tour guide Jojo always knows where you are via satellite tracking. On this enduro journey through Africa, tough kilometres on laterite-like tracks lie ahead, past extinct volcanoes. The paths through Malawi lead through tea plantations, mango forests and banana fields as far as the eye can see. In the evening you set up camp at Lake Malawi: cold beer, a jump into the water and a view of the crocodiles included.

Day 4: Lake Malawi - enduro to Zambia
Day 4 · Malawi

Day 4: Lake Malawi - enduro to Zambia

With the first rays of sun over Lake Malawi you get on the motorcycle and ride toward Zambia. Between warm rain showers and sunshine, unforeseen adventures await. This stage has its riding challenges: our enduro trips are known for a 'battle day', and this last stretch along Lake Malawi can become the surprise stage of the equator motorcycle expedition. Past the Nkhotakota game reserve you reach a small border post into Zambia.

Zambia
Stage 4

Day 5

Zambia

In Zambia your Nairobi to Namibia motorcycle tour runs along the Lower Zambezi to Livingstone and Victoria Falls, with a possible rest day at Mosi-oa-Tunya.

Day 5: Zambia - enduro to Victoria Falls
Day 5 · Zambia

Day 5: Zambia - enduro to Victoria Falls

English as the official language helps you through the many ethnic groups and languages of young Zambia, independent since 1964. On your motorcycle expedition you trace your own line along the Lower Zambezi National Park and Lake Kariba. Depending on your condition and schedule, two sporty riding days lie ahead until you arrive in Livingstone at Victoria Falls. A rest day is worthwhile, for example for a helicopter flight over the roaring Mosi-oa-Tunya.

Stage 5

Day 6

Botswana

Over the Zambezi, this Africa enduro expedition brings you into Botswana, where four countries meet at Kazungula, along with Africa's largest elephant population.

Day 6 · Botswana

Day 6: Kazungula - over the Zambezi into Botswana

Motorcycle and enduro trips are unusual in Zambia, so the border officers in Kazungula look on with some surprise. Here, at the four-country corner of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia's Caprivi Strip, you cross the Zambezi border river and reach the expedition's last landlocked country. Botswana counts only around four inhabitants per square kilometre, but around 130,000 elephants, so on the tracks you often meet more elephants than people.

Stage 6

Day 7

Namibia

Namibia, the land of the San, closes out your Nairobi to Namibia motorcycle tour: endless horizons, sparse settlement and the last kilometres to Walvis Bay on the South Atlantic.

Day 7 · Namibia

Day 7: Namibia - land of the San to Walvis Bay

Welcome to the last country of the Trans-Africa motorcycle trip: Namibia, the land of the San. After Mongolia it is the most sparsely populated country in the world, around 2.5 people per square kilometre. On the last kilometres you cross the Omaheke, Khomas and Erongo regions and, with a bit of luck, spend the night at a San village kraal. Not far from Namib-Naukluft Park you enjoy the million-star hotel under the open sky one last time, before Walvis Bay awaits.
