Lassithi, Nida & the East Coast, Self-Guided

The base is the Anissaras Beach Motocamp on the beach near Heraklion: seven nights, a rental motorcycle outside the door and a free choice every morning. Route tips come from the hosts on site, and you ride without a guide and without a fixed plan – up to the Lassithi plateau, over to the Nida Plateau or out to the east coast at Sitia and Mochlos. Arrival and departure are possible daily, with Monday recommended, when the other guests arrive too. Personal airport transfer, breakfast and dinner are organised for the whole week.

Highlights

Eastern Coastal Route

From Agios Nikolaos via Ierapetra to Sitia and on to the fishing village of Mochlos: winding roads along the sea alternate with stops at fresh souvlaki stands and tavernas right on the water.

Mountain Switchbacks

The roads wind through small mountain villages such as Mohos and Neapoli at around 1,100 metres altitude. Along the way it is worth stopping at Taverna Aristodimos, where landlady Niki still cooks herself using her own produce.

A Week at Anissaras Beach

The base is the Anissaras Beach Motocamp right on the beach near Heraklion. Seven nights, daily breakfast and six wood-oven dinners form the foundation for the daily rides out on the rental motorcycle.

Pass to Lassithi Plateau

The eastern pass climbs to around 1,100 metres up to the Lassithi plateau, through hundreds of bends to Agios Nikolaos and on to the Elounda peninsula, with views of the former leprosy station of Spinalonga.

Nida Plateau & Observatory

From the hotel village of Arolitos the way runs via Anogia up to the Nida Plateau, where legend says Zeus was born. The detour to the Skinakas Observatory at 1,758 metres rewards experienced riders with sweeping views.

Day 1–3

Greece

The island of Crete offers three very different example routes – from mountain passes to plateaus and the coast.

Route 1: Lassithi – Agios Nikolaos – Elounda
Day 1 · Greece

Route 1: Lassithi – Agios Nikolaos – Elounda

The eastern pass climbs to the Lassithi plateau, past small mountain villages at around 1,100 metres altitude. It continues to Agios Nikolaos, the birthplace of Cretan tourism, and to Elounda with views of Spinalonga island, before the way leads back via Neapoli to the mountain village of Mohos.

Route 2: Arolitos – Anogia – Nida Plateau
Day 2 · Greece

Route 2: Arolitos – Anogia – Nida Plateau

From Heraklion towards Anogia, past the hotel village of Arolitos, the way climbs to the Nida Plateau, where legend says Zeus was born. A detour leads on to the Skinakas Observatory at 1,758 metres, before the road runs back via Anogia towards Heraklion.

Route 3: Coast Agios – Sitia – Mochlos
Day 3 · Greece

Route 3: Coast Agios – Sitia – Mochlos

The coastal loop starts in Agios Nikolaos heading towards Sitia, passes the narrowest point of the island and continues to the waterfront cafés of Ierapetra. Via the longest broom and oleander road in Europe you reach the fishing village of Mochlos, before heading back to the motocamp.
