Motorycle Tours in Poland

Poland is probably the most underrated motorcycling destination in Europe, but we bet it won’t remain unnoticed for long. In fact, Poland might just become the new Portugal or Italy: it’s got everything from mountains, coastline, medieval castles, and great biking roads down to excellent cuisine and fantastic people. Motorcycle tours in Poland are jam-packed with adventure, scenic roads, mountain twisties (yes, Poland has mountains, and pretty spectacular ones at that), beautiful countryside, and magnificent towns and cities with exquisite Old Towns and great dining. All the way from the capital Warsaw to the small but breathtakingly beautiful Krakow, Poland offers great riding, diverse landscapes, and wonderfully rich heritage and culture.

When it comes to motorcycling Eastern Europe, most people imagine bleak post-Soviet cities and uninspiring scenery, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Poland boasts excellent coastal roads and charming seaside towns along the Baltic Sea, plenty of off-road trails for those who prefer riding dirt, and incredible mountain roads in its southern regions of Silesia. Polish cities and towns are a major attraction point for history and architecture buffs and are often compared to places like Vienna, Budapest, and Prague; vibrant and colorful urban life, beautiful downtown areas, and mouth-watering cuisine are all part of the deal when riding motorcycles in Poland. And best of all, this amazing Eastern European country is still uncrowded by hordes of tourists, so you can have the Polish countryside and its incredible roads all to yourself.

Poland also boasts a very strong motorcycling culture, so don’t be surprised to see local riders exploring their country aboard adventure bikes, especially off-road. In fact, motorcycle tours in Poland are almost guaranteed to run into a group of Polish riders on a weekend’s outing, so expect to make new friends when you’re touring this awesome corner of Europe on two wheels.

Motorcycle Tours in Poland: Highlights

Poland is a big country, and riding motorcycles here can take up weeks if you want to see it all. However, most motorbike tours in Poland focus on several key highlights, and these are some of our favorites:

Warsaw
Likely the starting point of your Poland motorcycle tour, Warsaw is an awe-inspiring city straddling the majestic Vistula river. It’s spectacular Old Town resembles Viennese grandeur but offers Parisian charm with unmistakably Polish atmosphere, cozy cobblestone alleys, and excellent restaurants and eateries offering traditional Polish and international food. Warsaw is best explored over the course of a couple of days, and we highly recommend visiting the Modlin Fortress just outside the city, a breathtaking nineteenth century fort overlooking the stunning valley where the Narew and Vistula rivers meet. If you’re up for an adventure, Modlin Fortress is accessible via small dirt roads leading right up its entrance.

Krakow
Poland’s cultural capital, Krakow is easily the most beautiful city in the country, if not the entire Eastern Europe. One of the oldest cities in Poland, Krakow boasts a truly exquisite Old Town showcasing its Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance heritage with a massive town square surrounded by lofty historic buildings now converted into upscale restaurants, craft beer breweries, and cafes. Steeped in rich history and tradition and certainly worthy of a visit, Krakow is a must-see on your Poland motorcycle tour. If you’re into food experiences, Krakow is famous for its pierogi, bigos (“hunter’s stew”) and nalesniki (delicious pancakes). And, if you’re after a little aperitif, Polish vodka is a must try!

Silesia
Bordering Czech Republic and Germany, Silesia has a unique cultural heritage and some phenomenal scenery. Old medieval castles perched on hilltops, green rolling hills, and the Sudeten Mountain range offer plenty of great scenery, and you can bet most motorcycle tours in Poland will route via Zakopane, the country’s skiing resort turned into outdoor lovers’ paradise in the summer. Silesia is an ideal place for motorcycling and, due to its proximity to Czech Republic and Germany, provides a natural crossroads between the three countries if you want to cover more than just Poland on your motorcycle tour. If you love riding off-road, the area around Zakopane has no shortage of exciting dirt trails revealing the beautiful valleys and lakes hidden away in the mountains, especially near the Slovakian border.

Practical Information for Touring Poland

Poland experiences harsh winters with subzero temperatures, so the best time to travel here is late spring through to late fall. The best months for motorcycle tours in Poland are May, June, July, and August when the weather is warm and sunny. You can get away with riding in lightweight summer gear, but pack your waterproof layers in case of rain.

Poland uses its own currency, the zloty, and is a relatively cheap country to travel. Most places, including supermarkets, gas stations, and hotels accept cards, but do carry a little bit of cash if you’re planning to explore the more rural areas. You can expect to send around $50-$60 a day on your food, fuel, and accommodation in Poland. Keep in mind that the prices will be higher in Warsaw and Krakow, especially during the high season, but out in the countryside, the inns and restaurants will not break your budget, and you can stay at some charming lodges and guest houses for a fraction of the cost of what you’d pay in Germany next door.

You may have heard that Eastern Europe isn’t the safest region, but the reality is, that is a thing of the past. Poland is a very safe country to travel, much like its close neighbors Germany and Czech. Polish people are extremely friendly and welcoming to travelers, and most speak very good English, even in the countryside, so you can travel confidently and comfortably.

When it comes to motorcycle choices, any bike will do. Depending on whether you’re joining one of the motorcycle tours in Poland or riding on your own, and how much off-road you are planning to do, adventure bikes are usually the best option. However, Poland has no shortage of paved and well-maintained roads, so if you prefer road motorcycles, ride with confidence – this country has plenty to offer regardless what bike you’re on.
