In the Alps and Dolomites the high passes are usually snow-free from June to September – the core window for high-mountain tours. Tuscany, the Apennines and the islands are more pleasant in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October), when temperatures are moderate and roads quieter. High summer stays hot and busy in the south.

Spring (Apr–Jun)

Tuscany , Apennines , islands

Mild, landscape in bloom, some passes still closed

Summer (Jul–Aug)

Dolomites , Western Alps , lakes

All Alpine passes open, hot and crowded in the south

Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Islands , central Italy , Friuli

Steady riding, less traffic, clear views

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Only the far south , with limits

Alpine passes closed, cold and wet in the north
